Driver Safety
- Wisconsin law gives bicyclists the same right to use the roadway as drivers of motor vehicles.
- Watch for riders at all times, especially at intersections, when parking and when opening vehicle doors.
- Every person riding a bicycle on a roadway is granted the rights and is subject to the responsibilities that apply to operators of a vehicle.
- Please follow the rules of the road, and treat the riders as if they were another automobile on the road.
- Motorist must leave at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicycle.
- Do not pass riders on a hill, blind curve or any situation where there is a double line down the center of the highway.
- If you find yourself behind riders climbing a hill or blind curve, please give them lots of room while they climb. Do not crowd them.
- Only pass riders when there is a clear direct path around them. Do not pass blindly.Do not honk or cheer at them from behind.
- When approaching riders from behind, do not speed up behind them and rapidly pass, pull up behind, allow them to realize you are behind them and then slowly and carefully pass.
- If operating a large or heavy vehicle, familiarize yourself with it before performing your duties.
- Keep in mind that your visibility, braking distance, balance, height clearance and maneuvering ability are all much worse than in a standard car. Drive carefully and defensively.
- If you are required to both drive and talk with other crew via cell phone or radio, the driving comes first.
- If needed, pull over and park before communicating. Keep conversations short and to the point; don't chat.
