At Camp

  • ACT Ride participants will be staying at public schools. Schools may or may not have air-conditioning, so please be prepared for both situations.
  • In good weather, you have the option to sleep on the gym floor or in a tent outside.
  • If you want to camp, you must bring your own tent, which you will be responsible for putting up each evening and taking down and delivering to the gear truck each morning.
  • At registration, you will be given an identification tag to post outside your tent or at your sleeping bag for emergency identification purposes.

Campsite Consideration

  • We are guests at each of our pit stops and camps. We want our hosts, as well as riders, volunteers and crew to have a great experience.

Tip: Writing your name and participant number on everything increases the chances that a lost item will get back to you.

Please follow these rules so that we can be invited back next year:

  • Don't litter at any time.
  • Use the toilets provided.
  • Respect every community that we visit.
  • No radios or noise after 9:00pm. We all need a good night's rest. No loud radios or noise at any time. Remember that many crewmembers are required to get up very early in the morning.
  • Set up your tent only in designated areas.
  • Be respectful of others; they have done and will do a lot of hard work. Don't let fatigue get the better of you.
  • You are responsible for bringing your gear bag from the gear trucks to your "home".

Showers and Lockers

Remember: Bike shoes cannot be worn inside the schools at any time!

  • Each school will have self-identified mens and womens bathrooms and locker rooms with individual lockers, so bring a padlock if you wish to use one.
  • Womens locker rooms at both camps have some curtained shower stalls available; mens locker rooms do not.
  • Wheelchair accessible showers are available at both camps.
  • Transgender participants have the option of showering during the private transgender shower time from 8:00 to 8:30 PM each night.

Meals

  • To all participants, we will be providing breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • There will be a vegetarian (sorry, not vegan) meal option. Your choice of vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals will be indicated on your identification badge.
  • Please wait until after caboose riders and crew have gone through the cafeteria line before going back for seconds.

Command Center and Lost and Found

  • Each night at camp, Camp Services and the Steering Committee will set up a Command Center, which is a designated place to go for questions and lost and found.
  • The ACT Ride is not responsible for any property that is lost or stolen.

"Nightly News"

  • Every night after dinner, we gather to present the "Nightly News" which includes information about what occurred during that day, expectations for the next day and "Random Acts of Kindness" (see Ride Traditions).

Quiet Hours

  • The hours from 9:00pm to 5:00am are designated as quiet hours.
  • If you want to stay up past 9:00pm, take your conversations away from sleeping areas.
  • If you need to get up and pack your gear before 5:00am, please be as quiet as possible.

Weather

  • The Steering Committee has specific plans in case of inclement weather, and we will communicate with all participants in the event of an emergency.
  • In the event of light rain, the Ride will continue.
  • If there is severe weather, you will be asked to find the nearest shelter until it is safe or until a Ride vehicle can pick you up.
  • If severe weather is expected to occur overnight, you will be required to vacate your tent and move into the school. No exceptions to this rule will be granted.

Entertainment

  • After an exhaustive day biking or working, the only thing that most participants want to do is eat dinner, relax and go to bed. However, some participants do enjoy a little activity in the evening.
  • We encourage you to bring playing cards, portable board games, sports equipment and other such activities to share with your fellow participants.
  • In addition, sometimes we are able to arrange activities sponsored or produced by residents in the area we visit.
  • On Friday and/or Saturday night participants may go to local bars and pubs, sharing our mission with our host community.
  • Remember, if you leave camp, please check out and behave responsibly because you represent the ACT Ride. We will share information of any such entertainment during Nightly News.

Pets

  • Pets are not allowed in camp on the ACT Ride.

Children/Minors

  • You must be over seventeen years of age to ride and over fourteen to crew. Crewmembers under seventeen must be accompanied by a guardian who is also on the crew.
