Creating an Effective Pledge Solicitation
Make It Personal
Start by writing about your participation in the ACT Ride. Tell your potential contributors why you’re a part of the Wisconsin AIDS Ride, how much you have to raise and where the money will go. Let them know about the commitment that you’ve made, both in fundraising and training. Don’t be afraid to sell yourself. What you are doing is important, not only to you, but to those affected by AIDS.
After Writing Your Pledge Letter or Email
Once you’ve mailed your pledge letter or sent your email, you will still have to do some follow-up. Many people, who have every intention of donating for you, will put the letter or email aside. Some will forget about it entirely. Follow up on your letters and emails with individual phone calls. Ask them if they received your comunications and if they have any questions. Be enthusiastic about the Ride. Your enthusiasm may inspire them to make a donation immediately.
You may want to follow your first letter with additional letters, postcards or emails documenting your progress on fundraising and training. Tell potential contributors about your first few training rides; let them know when you’ve raised certain dollar amounts or tell them about the killer hill you finally conquered. Include them in your ride experience by sharing your triumphs.
